Election Day is Monday, October 26, 2026.

Every municipality in Ontario will be going electing new councils this fall, including Burlington. You can find below a basic overview of the election, how to vote, important dates, and who to contact to check your eligibility and more.

What offices are up for election in October 2026?

Burlington residents will be voting for the offices of Mayor, their local City & Regional Councillor, and depending on their registration, either their Public School Trustee, Catholic Board Trustee, or Francophone School Board (Public and Catholic) Trustee. Unlike in prior years, there will be no election for Regional Chair following the decision by the province to make the position appointed.

There are six City & Regional Councillors to be elected in total, each assigned to a separate ward. The four Public Board and three Catholic Board trustees are elected based on the ward system as well, while the two Francophone Board trustees elected on much larger regional constituencies.

What does a City & Regional Councillor do?

A Burlington City & Regional Councillor is primarily responsible for a number of services and laws that touch our daily lives, including but not limited to:

  • parks, libraries, recreation & culture;

  • public transit, local roads, sidewalks, traffic signals and signage;

  • fire services, police services, local public health services, waste collection & treatment;

  • municipal-level licensing, by-law enforcement, building permits, infrastructure planning;

  • community housing and shelters, childcare subsidies, city-level social services delivery;

As well as managing the nearly $400-million operating budget for the City of Burlington, and the $1.2-billion operating budget for the Region of Halton which is funded from a variety of sources, including property tax rates which Councillors vote on directly.

If you are on the voter’s list for Ontario provincial elections, you will be on Burlington’s voters list - but you can check your registration online here. It will also tell you your Ward and school board registration.

  1. Online Voting Period: Wednesday, October 14 to Friday, October 23, 2026

  2. In-Person Advanced: Saturday, October 17 to Tuesday, October 20, 2026

  3. Election Day: Monday, October 26, 2026
